Dr. J's Gout Relief

WHAT IS GOUT?

Known as "the disease of kings and the king of diseases," gout has been endlessly studied by physicians.  It has caused suffering in countless humans at least since the days of Hippocrates.  Drug remedies available are not acceptable for some people because of the undesirable and sometimes disastrous side effects.  The drug most commonly prescribed for controlling gout, allopurinol or Zyloprim, has been linked directly to skin eruptions, vasculitis (inflammation of the vessels) and liver toxicity.  The most common side effect, skin reactions, may become severe or even fatal.  The skin can peel off in sheets and may be accompanied by chills and fever, aching joints, or jaundice.

CAUSE

Gout is caused by an excess of uric acid in the blood, tissues and urine. This excess can be caused by an increase in production by the body, by under-elimination of uric acid by the kidneys or by increased intake of foods containing purines which are metabolized to uric acid in the body.  The uric acid crystallizes in the joints, acting as an abrasive and causing swelling and pain.  Uric acid kidney stones may be a related problem.  Approximately 90 percent of gout sufferers are male.  Because uric acid is a by-product of certain foods, this condition is closely related to diet. It can be brought on by stress.  Obesity and an improper diet increase the tendency for gout.  Certain meats, seafood, dried peas and beans are particularly high in purines. Alcoholic beverages may also significantly increase uric acid levels and precipitate gout attacks.
